“Send me a DM!” It sounds so casual. So friendly. So... easy. But for most…

How LinkedIn Became Your Biggest Brand and Business Builder
If you still think LinkedIn is just a place to post your résumé and quietly hope a recruiter stumbles across it—oh friend, we need to talk.
Because LinkedIn has changed. A lot.
It’s gone from a digital résumé depot to professional powerhouse.
And if you haven’t evolved with it, you might be missing out on the biggest opportunity to grow your brand and business (without dancing on reels or yelling into the vast internet void).
So let’s walk down memory lane together—and peek at what’s next.
LinkedIn’s Humble Beginnings
Let’s go back to 2003. The year of flip phones, Myspace, and the debut of a scrappy little platform called LinkedIn.
It launched as a way for job seekers to post an online version of their résumé—and for recruiters to digitally window-shop for talent.
Clean. Efficient. No dog-face filters or dance challenges required.
In fact, it became the place for professional networking, and quietly earned the title of longest-running social media platform still in existence. (Yes, it predates Facebook!)
Over the years, the platform grew steadily—especially after being acquired by Microsoft in 2016. By 2024, it hit the jaw-dropping milestone of 1 billion users.
But somewhere between the endorsements and the awkward connection requests, something shifted…
The Rise of Thought Leadership
Let’s call it the glow-up era.
Around 2012, LinkedIn introduced its Influencer program—inviting big names like Richard Branson and Arianna Huffington to share original content on the platform.
That move? A game changer.
It signaled to everyone else: “Hey, this isn’t just for job hunting. It’s for idea sharing, industry insights, and establishing your voice.”
And suddenly, professionals everywhere started showing up not just to find work, but to share their work.
To teach. To lead. To inspire.
What was once a sterile résumé warehouse had morphed into a living, breathing content platform. One that actually encourages us to build a personal brand on purpose.
How LinkedIn Stands Out From Other Social Platforms
Folks, the internet is noisy. Every platform has its vibe, its chaos, and its algorithm trying to keep you hooked.
But LinkedIn? It’s different.
Here’s why:
- Intentionality: People come here to learn, connect, and grow—not doomscroll or stalk vacation photos.
- Professional-first, always: You’re not competing with bikini pics or viral pranks. Your insights shine here.
- Built-in credibility: Your profile, endorsements, and experience give instant social proof—something Instagram bios can’t do.
- SEO love: LinkedIn content ranks well on Google. A thoughtful post here can have more shelf life than a Tweet or Reel.
In short, if you’re a thoughtful professional who wants to attract aligned opportunities—without feeling like a walking sales pitch—LinkedIn is your playground.
My LinkedIn Journey: From Lurker to LinkedIn Leader
Confession: I didn’t always “get” LinkedIn.
Sure, I had a profile. Posted a headshot. Checked in occasionally.
But in 2015, something clicked.
I realized that if I wanted to attract my ideal clients for my meetings and event planning business, I needed to stop lurking—and start leading.
So I got intentional.
I began sharing insights, connecting with others in the industry, and showing up consistently.
No hard selling. No pretending. Just value, authenticity, and the occasional awkward selfie.
And guess what? It worked.
Not only did I grow my business—but in 2020, when the world turned upside down, my LinkedIn presence opened new doors.
Speaking gigs. Training clients. Branding work. A whole new business model built on… LinkedIn. (meta, right? no pun intended…)
Now, I help others do the same—especially introverted professionals who don’t want to yell to be heard.
Why LinkedIn Is Still the Best Place to Build Your Brand
Here’s the deal: Most platforms reward performative behavior.
But LinkedIn? It rewards perspective.
You don’t have to be loud, flashy, or post 17 times a day.
You just have to show up consistently, share real value, and be yourself (yes, even if you’re introverted, awkward, or hate “personal branding”).
If I’ve learned anything over the last decade, it’s this:
The opportunities go to the people who show up.
Not the most polished. Not the most followed.
The ones who are brave enough to say, “Here’s what I know. Here’s how I can help.”
